
Monkfish (Lophius americanus

![]() | Monkfish on the Ledge: Monkfish have recently been fished extensively both on Jeffreys ledge and on other offshore banks in New England. They are a flat, bottom dwelling fish which prefers cold water. They can range from shallow areas to those with depths of over 1,500 feet. They are distinguished by a very wide mouth and a generally sluggish behavior. Although they have been overfished in recent years, most of the "meat" of the monkfish is toxic to humans. However, the sides of the thick, powerful tail are very sweet, and have been called "poor man's lobster." The most important economic product from the monkfish is their liver. Used for sushi in Japan, the price has risen to over $4 per pound to the boat (a very high price). However, recent management actions to protect the species are starting to greatly limit monkfish catches. Other Sites: |
